I just bought a 1963 SWB with a running 230. The motor smokes and after taking off the air cleaner I noticed that the carb is leaking. I think it is the seal on the other piece which rises above the intake manifold. I thought the carb should be a Rochester but it is a Carter YF. Both sets of numbers (neck 6-1658 and 1535) I have taken off of it have led me nowhere with respect to rebuild kits. I would like to evaluate the engine whether it is shot or not but I am afraid to run the truck long enough for the exhaust manifold to start a fire. Where should I be looking for the right number? Since the motor smokes and smells bad should I just punt and find another I6 of SBC? Any help would be appreciated. A search did not yield much.

Thanks for the link. I will look it over some more. Could the smoke the motor makes be "cured" if the carb is cleaned. The truck has been sitting for over 6 years and I do not see a fuel filter on it. I hate to mess with this motor if it is done for.

the only smoke that a bad carb can cause is black smoke. Blue smoke is caused by burning oil.

I would fix the carb. & test it out. There are lots of things that could cause an engine that has been setting around to smoke. It might be an easy fix or clear up after its run awhile.

I am planning to remove the carb and hopefully I can find the right number to buy a rebuild kit. I will also remove the tank and clean it myself or have somone else (radiator shop) do it. The tank need cleaned whether I keep the 230 or put in a 350. This truck has been sitting for at least 6 years. I will also perform a compression test. I removed one of the plugs to match it with the right compression tester and noticed that the inside is as dark and oily as the outside of my motor. The plug was covered with black. I have heard that when engines sit oil seeps down on top of the cylinders. How long would it take to burn this oil out? I can buy a 65 long bed for $1000 that has a running 327 two barrel, a good seat and two chrome bumpers. It is looking better and better as a parts truck.

Take the carb. off and take it with you to the parts store,they can usually match it up with the right kit.

For what it's worth, Carter YF rebuild kits are pretty available. They made tons of them for many different car manufacturers. I even found a site for NOS ones. I wish I could just remember the URL.
