Count me amongst the Ranks ! I bought this 1950 Chev 3800 one ton Panel truck about two years ago from a farm family in Virginia and hauled it home to Conover , NC . It had been sitting in a field for 12 years , but not really in that bad a shape considering . I had full intention of building a rat rod from a Panel truck as I was impressed by several I had seen at various cruise ins and car shows around my area . But not this Baby and am keeping it origional !! Upon closer inspection when I got it home , I saw that pretty well everything was on it and had good potential to fix up and keep it as she left the factory in 1950 .
Got the 216 engine running without too much trouble ; new brake lines and rebuilt the cylinders etc ; new gas tank ; new regulator and got the generator rebuilt ; new exhaust system ; rewired it completely . I had to buy some 16" wheels with rubber to lower the height by 3" so it would fit into my garage . I still have the 17" split rims with old tires on , but dont know if I will hang onto them .

I have just started on the front end and am installing new king pins and cleaning up the springs ,shackles ,tie rod ends etc .

Just about ready for the road and then it will be a paint job and some rechroming !! Great fun alround . Some recent pictures here with Photobucket , and hope they are visible .

Hi, I'm Jim, been working to restore a 53 one ton, mine has evolved from a 49 that was in pretty rough shape into a 53, since I have had to replace the cab,frame,and bed. Originally I got the truck from a gentleman in Sumner, Washington for $180.00, he was asking $175.00(just what he had into it). hardest part is keeping the project going.....just would like to add, I have some extra parts if anyone is in need, willing to sell or trade if anyone out there is looking.

I live in Cleburne, TX and drive my 49 3800 dual wheel Chevy all the time.

I'm getting this 47 1 ton to add to my collection. Running and driving with a GMC 248.

I have two, a '49 GMC 1 ton dually platform and a '50 GMC 1 ton panel. I've had th'49 since '88, it took about 2 years to get'r up and running as a daily driver and a couple more years to finish up the bed. I obtained the '50 panel in '02 and managed to get it going in May of 2010, in time to make the ATHS in Pleasanton, CA, it still needs some finish work.

It was sitting for "several years" and wasn't running. Worked on it a bit to get it running. It's still a bit rough, but qualifies for being in the yard. Rule is it must move on its own power to be in the yard (doesn't have to stop, but ebrake must function).

Chief is not on the front burner, so it will need to wait in line for further needs. At least it didn't go to the crusher!

Chief looks like a great save from the crusher, glad to see you did it. I like that round corner bed on there, you got a nice one!

OK I'm in! Yesterday, fellow stovebolter garandboy and I met in San Ramon, CA, to pick up this old gal, a 1952 Chevy 1-ton single wheel that was sitting on a cattle ranch out there. The truck still has Wyoming plates from her former career as a fence mending and welding truck on the 2Dot Ranch in Cody, WY. She's got a really wacky ranch-built fence mending/welding bed on it that was scabbed together with scraps but appears to have been quite functional for it's intended use. The very cool logo of the ranch construction company, Taggert Construction, is still on the door (yes, I'm keeping it, and yes I've already sent Czechman a photo for his door art collection) - apparently, Taggert was the company that built most of the roads through Yellowstone Park back in the day. She was trucked over to CA back in 1998 or so and lived on a cattle ranch here for some time, working and driving some but mostly sitting unused. I lucked out and got her for $1200, which I think is a good deal considering she got new wheels, tires, brakes, and exhaust, all the lights and gauges work, and she fires right up and runs nice and smooth. Not a bad price for a running truck in this area, too - like everything else in CA, old trucks tend to be pricey here. Anyways, I'm going to take off the old fence mending bed and garandboy is going to build a welding trailer for himself with it. Then I'll put a nice age-appropriate wooden stake bed on her and she'll be good to go!

My brother had a 49 i-ton, I always thought it was pretty cool, He never did anything to it other than keep it running, He gave it to his son, And all he did was leave it thru the winter without antifreeze. The city wanted to haul it off, as it was an eyesore so my nephew sold it to me. I am almost finished, I've gone thru every nut and bolt. I really love this truck, And can't wait to get her on the road.

I have a '51 1 ton with single rear wheels. Bought it about a month and a half ago.

I absolutely LOVE my 52 1 ton panel eventhough it's up on jackstands while I go through the front end and brake system...GO 1 TON GO...

I just got my '38 1 ton home. I think it will stay a flatbed with stake side rails.
