Anyone that has done a leaf spring rebuild i got a question. Where did you get replacement clips to hold the spring together? Did you simply reuse the old clips?

duh nevermind i found what i wanted at Eaton Springs.

Mr Denny, why didnt you use the teflon liners on your springs? I thought they were to make them quieter and better ride. What cha think?
I used them on mine but I'm not on the road yet so I don't know if they were worth it or not.

Didn't come from the factory with teflon liners. I strive for originality if I want a silky smooth quiet ride I drive my new GMC Sierra.

thought you had fallen off the face of the earth.

sitting at coffee this morning and staring out the window at my truck, i really noticed the "left" lean (not political or related to the earth's gravitational rotation) and was wondering if i should spend the money and time on going through the whole leaf spring/bushing/shackle trouble and exspense or just spend the money on a carter carb and see if i could overcome the stumble in my rochester b.

also...is there any merit in getting the springs re-sprung or would a person just be better off buying new?

I opted to buy new springs because each leaf had worn considerably into the leaf above it. I figured that way it would last another 50+ years!

Samantha brings up a good point, look closely at each leaf. You can grind out any steps that are starting to form under each leaf, but if they have dug in a lot then replace them. This is the time to clean and paint each leaf, add the liner strips and replace all the broken clamps. You can make your own clamps with simple flat stock from the hardware store and some big rivets. I used some round head, drive in, concrete anchors, cut off at the right length for rivets. Bend the clamps to 90 degrees on each side with a little space between the leaf for the Teflon liner. Once you have all the leafs in place and the center bolt tight, cut the remaining clamp strap to length and bend over the top so they meet in the center of the top leaf. I had to heat the strap to get a good sharp bend. It sounds harder then it is.

Don't bother with grease or oil on the leafs, its won't last and only collects dirt and grit. The full length Teflon,
(poly-glide) works good, so does the little Teflon pucks at each end of each leaf. Both separate the leafs so they slide better. As far as sliding to easy and the shocks not keeping up, I don't think so. In fact I went with softer shocks so the truck would bounce even more, Heavy Duty was just to much for the weight of my truck (3200 lbs).
