If I dribble a little gas in the carb, it starts and runs til the gas burns then it dies. When I pulled the fuel line and hit the starter, a small amount of gas flows out. Based on that I think I have a good pump and filter. You pulled the fuel line from where? It should get a strong pulsing fuel flow if your path in unobstructed. Step one pull the line from the carb & crank the starter. If no strong flow pull the line from the outlet side of the pump & crank it. If no strong flow pull the feed side. Fuel should run out with no restriction. Work your way back until there's no restriction. If you get all the way to the tank with just a dribble it's time to pull & clean the tank.

stops it is a good sign the fuel pump is defective.

I think I have a a problem in the line from the tank to the fuel pump or the tank itself. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 445 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 445 | Sounds like the tank tank First, Check the pump pressure with a vaccum gauge 5 to 7 lb.If pressure is ok.You can try dis connecting the line from the tank to the pump. bypass the tank .use a gallon can as your fuel tank,if it runs you know it;s the tank needs cleaned. or try blowing air form line to tank this is just a temp fix.the crap will settle again

The truck idles fine but has very poor acceleration and even backfires when I try to speed up. So I think a carb kit purchase is in my future. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 | Also, FWIW, I've noticed that the original glass-topped fuel pump works a heck of a lot better than the modern all-metal replacements. The modern ones would deliver fuel, sure, but they didn't seem to deliver enough and I had the same issues you describe. I ended up adjusting the mixture so that it would run right, but I had all kinds chugging when the truck went up a hill, and problems starting the engine.
And this was after I had rebuilt and cleaned up the carburetor and had the tank cleaned up, and replaced the fuel filter.
I finally compared the rebuilt pump to the replacement I'd purchased, and it was no contest. While the modern metal unit did deliver fuel up through the fuel filter and to where I'd pulled the line from the carb, the stream wasn't terribly strong.
The glass-top unit almost hit the firewall.
The old girl runs a lot better with the old rebuilt unit. Dunno why the new ones don't seem to be as good. | | |
