I am having problems with the u joints. According to the manual there are cap screws that need to be removed. My truck does not seem to have these at either the front or mid u joint? The ball joint only seems to move back 2+" Any help would be greatly appreciated. 4 speed box, 20" dual wheels.
There is a uni at the back of the gearbox, one behind the centre bearing, and one on the diff pinion. Its a two piece shaft, all exposed, no torque tube.
Each uni is held in place with two u bolts in one plane, and fully captive on the other plane.
I'm figuring you have something different?
I undid the ubolts and it all wiggled off. As Crenwelge said, drop the centre bearing and it should come off.

The front u joint has the snap rings holding the bearing cups but the rings can't be reached to undo. The mid carrier u joint does not have snap rings and seems to have a different set up than what the manual describes. Any advise would be greatly apprciated. Thanks | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy tracermc, okay if your driveshaft does not have "U" bolts holding the U joints in place, then it probably has a flange system with four studs sticking out from the flange on the transmission output shaft, if you remove the four retaining nuts from the studs you should be able to pry the flange off of the transmission output flange, the center support may have a similar system, good luck, and let us know how you made out. | | |
