Hello,
On the highway, my '57 Suburban cruises easily at 70mph: it does make a lot of wind noise, the hood even caves in a bit in the middle sometimes...
I love the looks of the outside sun-visor but wonder if it would make the truck noisier at speed, if it would even slow it down a bit, and I even wonder if that old design of a sun-visor would be ripped off at speed!...
Any thoughts, any experiences?
Thanks!

I have driven my '56 with factory style visor for many miles at 75 mph and more and it hasn't been ripped off yet. With all the noise an old truck makes at 70, I don't see how you could determine how much of it is made by the wind on the visor.

The Fulton visor has a 2-3" gap across the back between the visor and roof to allow air to pass. If it's mounted correctly there's little risk of it ripping off. I've had my '38 up to nearly 70 without issues.

the TF hood working at speed has more to do with the void of the engine compartment and air turbulence under the truck, a well designed belly pan could help that ... if you're worried about wind noise behind the wheel of something that has the aerodynamics of a refrigerator, you need to work on sound deadening in the cab wink

Actually, I think a fridge is more aerodynamic than my Suburban!
I like your thinking about the void in the engine compartment and turbulence under the truck. Could you elaborate on the idea of a bellypan to help this? Like, what shape, where...
I will take anything to help cut through the wind!!!

Seriously? A belly pan?

Sure the belly pan sounds like a cool project but wouldn't this be a more appropriate route:

Check and replace as needed: Door seals, window seals, vent seals, firewall grommets, carpet or rubber mat, add sound deadening or firewall insulation.

Just seems like that would be much more productive approach than a belly pan.

I guess the bellypan idea moves us a bit away from my first concern, extra noise caused by a sun-visor, and is more about cutting through the wind more easily.
Looking at the shape of my TF, it is clear it will always have a wind noise issue!

the bellypan simply relates to the comment about the hood flexing, has little or nothing to do with noise or the visor, and I doubt it'd reduce wind resistance much .... not likely there's much of anything you could do to cut through the wind easier, short of a major redesign of the entire front end, including the windshield shape and the slight original brow above it

I believe GM made the change in the hood shape in 58 as the cheap/easy fix to the hood action in the 55-57, the 58 and 9 don't seen to do that at all wink

hood problem can be solved by a caulking gun of adhesive between the hood bracing and the underside of the hood, stops oilcanning...

It does not really bother me that the hood caves in, it was an illustration to go with my initial question, whether or not adding a sun-visor would make a difference in speed, noise, hood cave-in...
Always nice to chat anyway!
