It's about to get a 350 V8 and I'm considering a T-5 to replace the 3-speed SM-318. Anything in particular I'm going to need to put one in?

Study the tech tips & search the other posts. There has been much discussion on this. You will need a special clutch disc, a crossmember to go in the rear on the trans, & have the drive shaft shortened.
Remember these are not real strong trans. I have put them behind 350's & run one now, but you can't go out there & do burn outs & speed shifting.

Not really well versed in that area, and for the crossmember am i going to need fabrication work or can the stock be modified a little to fit?

What to grab for a T-5 swap. Bowtie tim gives part numbers for the clutch disc or if you have a clutch shop nearby they can make one up. If you have an automatic you already have a crossmember at the rear of the trans. You can get a universal one or fabricate one. Some guys run without one like the original cast iron trans. but I sure wouln't with that long thin alum. one.
