Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 306 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 306 | hello i've been sifting through the posts in this forum for a couple of weeks now and have yet to see one like this i have a 54 235 the number stamped behind the dist is F54Z it also has a data plate rivited above the block casting # ( 3835911) that indicates that it has been over hauled job #, cyl .030, journals .010, etc i'm curious if that means gm did the work? my problem is that i can't get the cam out. folowing the instructions i downloaded from this site and those in the 54 fsctory manual- once i pulled the crank gear i rotated the cam looking thru the holes found 3 bolts instead of two screws. i removed all 3. then when i tried to slide the cam out it only moved a quarter inch before it hit on something. i can't see anything that would hang it up there are two screws on the front plate. i broke a screw driver trying to take one out. the other is behind the cam timing gear and the hole does not allow access i quit at that point. what have i missed that will let me get the cam out? thanks

As you slide the cam forward check to make sure the lobes are not hitting the crank, also support the cam so the lobes don't scrape the cam bearings. Good Luck.

everything was coming off so well..... thanks

The lifter body just above the cam lobe never goes completely into the lifter bore; in time, this area collects a varnish coating so the lifter doesn't want to move up farther than it ran. Use a wood dowel rod to knock the lifters up enough to get the cam out, then drive the lifters down and out. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 306 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 306 | sure enough it was the lifters. once i got them out of the way the cam came right out thanks guys i'm waiting on one valve to have the head done and a cylinder ridge hone to get the pistons out so far she looks good and i have a lead on amachine shop to get her cleaned up i'll be in touch thanks again
