Hi -- The numbers on the left side are 590783 5 A286 On Top under the lid is SI 49263. I had bought this to go in a 34 truck but it has narrow mounting holes---what year is this tranny?

Davy, I'm in Northern California also and have a '36 Chevy pickup. It is the "High cab" early '36 that has the same cab as your '34.

Do you have a picture of the trans that you posted about? My email is [email protected]. I can compare it to the 3-speed in my '36. The 3-speed that fits our pickups was used in many '32-'36 Chevy vehicles.

Thanks but i don't have a pic right now. I have the regular tranny for my '34 with the wide bolt pattern--this other tranny for my next truck has the narrow bolt pattern that goes onto the bell. Seems odd to have this narrow pattern on a supposedly old unit. Thanks for the reply anyway maybe i can use a friends camera.

My 34 bell housing to transmisssion bolt pattern is quite wide compared to this transmission I bought sight unseen. The pattern is almost two inches narrower. Surely this is a much newer transmisssion-correct? How can I find out what the numbers indicate and identify this unit?

Davy, does the trans you bought have threaded lugs on both sides of the case for the pedals and e-brake handle to bolt to?

Let me look---, no, only a drain on the left and a set screw on the right. No threaded studs or tapped holes on either side. Serves me right i guess for not checking it out better but I still would like to find out what it is. Thanks

That 590783 is a 1936 standard car trans. a smaller trans and will not fit.

Ahha--. Thanks alot for that. So it really was out of a '36 --I didn't realize they had a different tranny for the cars. That is interesting too as a point where they started making the cars and trucks different--for different uses. Thanks again, now I can at least attempt to trade it or something. It won't collect dust forever in the shop waiting for some undisclosed future use---.
