Got the old girl running for the first time since 1978. Runs fair, and has an occasionally sticking valve in the #4 hole. It sticks for two or three firing cycles and then is ok for 30 seconds and then does it again, and then may idle for five minutes before doing it again. Any good fixes? Is it likely to work itself out?

Let it sit overnight, then fire up the engine (valve cover still off) and soak it down again with the engine running. If a couple of treatments like that don't fix it, it's time to pull the head and get a valve job done. www.kanolabs.comJerry

The fresh gas will dissolve some of the old varnished up gas which then will stick to the shafts of the intake valves. Consider yourself fortunate that you haven't stuck one or more fully shut & bent pushrods like I did. I had to pull the head and drive every intake valve out of the head mine were stuck so tight. All of that happened after just one time of getting the engine started and allowing it to run after sitting for 20 years.

The rebuilder didn't check for cracks and left worn guides in the head. The sticking was caused by antifreeze getting into the guide from a crack in the head. I doubt that yours has this problem.
It is quite a feeling to get one of these running after such a long time sitting, isn't it? | | |
