I understand how a electric tach works but what about a cable tach???? how is it driven and will it work on my 1954 3100... Peter

the cable tachs ive seen are hooked to the distributer

Early Corvettes used a fitting on the back of the generator for the tach, IIRC. Get a 54 Corvette generator for you 54 if that is the case.

electric tachs are much easier to install and work as good as a mechanical.

Stewart Warner has an adapter that goes between the distributor body and the cap with the drive for the tach in it.
