For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 231 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 231 | Hey i currently got a 1964 283 4spd 4x4 in my truck im not sure what model the tranny and transfer case are,if they even had different ones back then. my question is i plan on putting a F**d flat head V8 in it, and heard that they can be matched up with a S-10 t5 manual transmission. would that t-5 match up with the current transfer case i have right now? and would i have to make a new transmission crossmember to put the t-5 in? Thanks | | | | | Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 1,552 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 1,552 | The standard-equipped factory tranny in the '60-'66 Chevy 4x4 trucks is the SM420, granny-low 4-speed. The transfer case is the divorced style and is a T221. I am not able to speak to the fit of a Blue Oval powerplant in a Chevy truck, however, with a divorced transfer case, the connecting link is the front driveshaft, so there are no bolt patterns to match.
FYI, with low production numbers and survivors becoming more difficult to find, the '60-'66 Chevy 4x4 trucks with factory running gear are getting more difficult to find. From an economics standpoint, the truck is an appreciating-asset, if left unmolested, with original running gear. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 231 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 231 | Currently my 53 body is sitting on the 64 chassis so i dont know if that would effect the price of what its worth, so i havent really been to afraid to stray away from the originality of the truck. and looking into ive decided against the flat head, and going for a 350, will my transmission be o.k. with the bigger engine? and how much is the original 283 worth with it needing to be rebuilt? | | | | | Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 800 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 800 | "looking into ive decided against the flat head, and going for a 350" Now you're making some sense. The 283 may be worth more for it's parts than as a complete assembly. If it has ram's horn exhaust manifolds and Chevrolet scrip valve covers, you could ebay those off for about as much as you'd get for the engine as a package. Maybe the heads might be worth something as well if they are desirable. As far as your transmission is concerned, if it fits the 283 now, it will fit the 350. Personally, I'd squirrel the 283 away in a corner, and when funds allowed, I'd have it rebuilt or at least looked at by a pro. Maybe it doesn't need a complete rebuild. You may aquire another project in the future which could use the 283. Nice little engines to have around. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 462 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 462 | I agree with k10 on keeping the 283 engine,i have 1 in my 68 and it runs good and good gas mileage.

I see a GM truck in your future!
