I recently acquired a Carter YF 966S carburetor. The metering rod jet is marked 120-162. One of Carb King’s old postings stated that the last 2 digits of this number is the orifice size of the jet in thousandths on the YFs. So then it would be a 0.062 orifice. The low speed jet assembly has 11-325 stamped on the head (At least I think it does, it is hard to read). I’m not sure if this is a part number or this number can also be used to determine the size of the jet.

I’m not familiar with the correct size of the YF jets for a Chevy 235. I live on the coast in So. California. I’m just wondering if these jets would be either too lean or too rich. I’m not that well acquainted with the Carter YF.

Thanks.
Mark

You need to re-read the source.

The last 2 digits are the size in thousandth IF AND ONLY IF the part number is 120-350 OR HIGHER. This does not apply to jets 120-349 and lower. Then the number is just a part number with no additional meaning.

966S

Low speed jet assembly part # should be 11-232S.
Low speed jet tube: Jet size No. 67 (.032 inch) drill.

The metering rod jet is .1015 inch diameter.
Standard metering rod - part # 75-838.
Metering rods also came in 1 & 2 sizes lean.

If you're lucky enough to find an old repair package, #1742,
jets and metering rod were included in the kit.

Thanks for the info. I like the Carter over the Rochester B. The 966 that I have is in fairly good shape with the exception of some parts that I could get in a kit. Finding replacement jets maybe a challenge.

All parts other than the castings are readily available.

The stock configuration was used by Carter from sea level to 4000 feet; although today with E-10, it may be a bit lean.
