How far can you bore it? shave the head header intake manifold fuel injection turbo supercharger. I'm I better off putting in a more modern engine. I don't want to cut it up and I don't mind putting the 292 on a stand, and put in something else. For now I have a nice BMW six and a 5 speed trany Is there a better chose? | | | | | Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 1,002 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 1,002 | What's the 292 going into?

I like to build things that I don't have to work on all the time. I was a boat maniac for a wile. I have never built Chevy 6 I can do fuel injection turbo's and SC chargers. What I really need to know is what is the max torque it will Handel with the stock crank, and if there are stronger cranks available, and what the week points are. It will need 300 +Hp to live in my world and do that all day long with no issues. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 1,002 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 1,002 | 300 horse should not be a problem, but it will not be a cheap build. The block on the 292 does not match any of the other sixes in the series 194/230/250, it is about 2 inches taller. The bolt on parts that fit the 230/250 will fit the 292. There were several cranks used in the 292 from the factory. The early 292s had a forged crank the later used a cast crank eithe 6 or 12 counter weights. There are no other cranks available AFAIK.
I would suggest that you go to inliners.org and do a search. Look particularly for tlowes Dyno Day test for the 292, he tested a multitude of parts for a street able 292, 300 hp was the upper limit. For an alternative you might look for EFI-DYI 4200 turbocharged and EFI build, he is almost most finished. The last dyno run got 500 hp, 500 torque, before the worked over 4L60E destroyed it's tail shaft.

Should get me there. But the next step is the tyranny and clutch are they going to hold up? Can I get an adapter for a five speed? | | | | | Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 1,002 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2002 Posts: 1,002 | I'll assume your talking about a borg warner t-5 which won't hold up to what your building. I'm considering a putting an early NV4500 in my 68 C20 it looks like it may bolt up. I have an A833 behind my 292 it's 4 spd, fourth being an OD. GM offered the A833 as an option (RPO MY6) from 82-86, bolts right in no adapter.

Is the bell housing the same as a SB? on the 292. Bellhousing has the same bolt pattern. Where in CA are you? I have a 292 in my '63 Chevy II. I am running a Holley 390, Offy intake, cast iron headers, and a schneider racing cam (264h). I'm told that with the stock head, it should be making around 210hp and 290 tq. For $800 in head work, I'd be at 250-260 hp and 325 tq.
