I don't know about that choice in engines, however, but power-wise, it appears to be a very good compromise between power and economy, and would undoubtedly get better gas mileage than a stock 1 barrel carbureted inline 6 would.
Now, if you could get that thing with an inline Cummins 6 cyl turbodiesel as an option, I would find that VERY intriguing. I especially like how you can just click on the color rainbow and change the paint color.
$50 grand is a lot for a street rod, but these are top notch. Of course anyone could do the same with their truck, but years later, all that time spent working on their truck could have been spent driving this one. So there's probably a market for it, and if I were considering a Chevy SSR, I'd probably buy this one instead.

The production truck is going to be equipped with one a ford engine. This has led to some lengthy threads on this site with theories as to why that engine and not a Chevy engine.
