I just changed the dual mufflers on my stock 235 with Fenton split, two part headers. I changed from a pair of Cherry Bomb manufactured Turbo mufflers that had a fairly quiet subdued sound to a pair of more throaty Flowmaster 40 Series Delta Flow two chamber mufflers part number 942042. The new Flowmasters sound really good and mellow at idle, smooth even acceleration and at smooth cruise. When ever I really punch the pair of dual Holly Webers mounted on an Offenhouser manifold, the sound of the new mufflers becomes a tinny/ rattle/ bark sound. With both windows down, it sounds like all of this objectionable noise comes from the passenger side and up front, not out of the back of the truck. I have checked for loose fittings and everything is tight. The new mufflers are welded to the pipes.
Does this sound like a tune up, timing, carb, etc. issue to any of you experts or is this just something in the mufflers?

Sounds like a common straight six sound with aftermarket exhaust to me. The Flowmaster 40's are kind of loud anyway and not as mellow as the Cherry Bombs, The rest of it is the fact that sounds are notoriously hard to describe, locate, isolate and please everyones ear. This is why it is unwise to weld mufflers in. I have the same issue currently with a new pair of Edelbrock mufflers (not welded) on my 57' BelAir. Might be just right for someone younger but I like a quiter mellower sound. A hundred miles on them and I'm sick of them. But they will be easy to change.

The sweetest sounding sixes I ever heard were on old schoolbuses that had very long exhaust pipes but no mufflers whatsoever. The cackled a little when shifting but were not loud. Just cool sounding.
