19 or 30? I have a friend needing a new carrier for his 57 GMC and I have a source for a 30 spline power lock from a 63 GMC... | | |

My '55 Willys had a 10-spline D44, they went through several evolutions. If you are running open carriers you can just swap the spider gears, but I dunno with a powerlock.

If the splines are not the same and both axles are Dana 44 You can just swap the spider gears. Just make sure the carrier is for the gearset You have, as long as there are 2 carriers, one for the gearsets from 2.87/1 up to 3,54/1, pinions ranging from 15 to 13 teeth, and another one for the gearsets equal or higher numerically than 3,73/1( gearsets with 12 - 8 teeth).
4onthefloor,
As far as I know, in the dana44 rear end all spider gears are interchangeable, as long as You're playing with the right gears for the right carrier, one leggers can take all for this use and the limited slip only with limited slips. But the smaller ones and the inner shaft are the very same stuff for all of them.

I know any open carrier for 3.07-3.73 ratio would be easier for him but was trying for the power lock as a prefered carrier. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 146 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 146 | Kenny W,
As I said before, You cannot swap spiders from one leggers to lockers, but You can try to locate just the spiders with the desired number of splines for the locker and do just swap then in the locker carrier. I have seen the indication that a carrier would go from 3.07 to 3.73 in catalogs, but check it out carefully, been working with danas for a while, and occasionally I have a 3.73/1 (11/41) rear in a dart here, it does not use the same carrier as the 3.07.
