| | | | Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 64 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 64 | I have my front end under my frame now and have moved to the rear end.My plan was to put a t-5 behind the 261 and go with a 55 to 62 pumkin with 3:90 gears,or just use the stock 3 speed with 355 gears.Then reality set in on how much I have spent already and how much more I am going to spend.So I decided for now until I get the truck runing and driving I would keep the stock trani and 4:11 gears in the rear end .This truck was not running when I bought it so I dont know what kind of condition the rear end is in.I have the rear end up on jack stands now and have pulled the drums of and took the cover off the rear end .There was plenty of gear oil in the rear end and the gears look good and I can not see any noticeable tooth wear .My qustion is I can move the axle 1/4 of inch before the ring gear moves at all. Would you guys consider this normal and would you feel comfortble putting this back under your truck ?

Try to move the ring gear & carrier sideways in the brgs. There should be no play sideways. If there is a small amout you can remove the locks & turn the adjusters in a little to remove it. Try to rotate the ring gear. There should be only 5-10 thousands backlash between the ring gear & pinion. I think it probably is OK but these are some things to look for.
You will like the T-5 changeover if you go that way.

I dont have any play at all from side to side with the ring gear ,but know I do have more than 10 Thousands backlash between the ring and pinion without even measuring it.
