The only thing is they have rust pits. Is there a trick to shining them? I was gonna try a soft wire wheel on my bench grinder but wanted to see if you guys know of another way before I start.

The chrome layer is very, very thin and a wire brush is WAY to abrasive as is scotch bright. You can't take the pits out, they are holes that have penetrated thru the plating. I would just use a good chrome polish like 3m Chrome Polish and then take a ball of aluminum foil and scrub it across the surface. the alum will fill the small pits and you will hardly be able to notice them.

That's ingenious! Should I spray with a clear coat afterwards to hold the alum foil in place?
Thanks for the tip! | | | | Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 866 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 866 | Good question, Ron, can't wait to find out the answer!!! | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | No, the little bit of foil will imbed it self in the pits so they aren't that noticable. I just wax over it and that's good enough. I guess it's ok to mention this now since the delership is long gone. Back in the late 50's early 60's I worked at Chevy dealerships and the guys preping the used cars for the lot would use that trick. Of course if you run your hand over the chrome you can still feel the pits but it make a good ten footer out of it. I have two stock hubcaps on my '50, 3600 that were pitted pretty bad and I used that trick on them and most people never notice it.
