My '49 3100 has a leaking rear axle seal, the axle retainers are riveted on, do you drill them out & replace them with nut & bolt? Any recommendations of how to's?

Thanks,

Kevin

Hy 49BOLT, you must remove the axle to repair your leak, so I guess they expect you to cut off the rivets and replace with bolts when the repair is completed, just as you suspected. There are many methods for rivet removal, just use whatever method you are comfortable with, and try not to damage the thin retainer flange, good luck.

If you are referring to the rivets holding the backing plate on, you do not have to remove it to remove the axle. You need to remove the C clip on the inner end of the axle. Refer to a manual or do a search to find out how to do this.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Thanks for the info, I thought that was the case, I couldn't find anything online, looking into ordering a reprint service manual.

Having a hard copy of the manual comes in veyr handy, but in the meantime, this should help you out.

49Bolt: you ask this same question in another forum to which I responded and also gave you the link to on line manuals. Hope you seen it.

Well finally got the axle seals replaced, relatively simple task once I read the procedure in the link LONGBOX55 sent me! While I was at it I replaced the wheel cylinders & brake shoes, can't wait to drive it down the road, however the weather in Cincy is cold & snowy right now.
