The problem is on a 1940 sedan, box stock.While driving, the shifter took a nose dive for the floor, apparently the shifter assembly ( keyed, rivited together, bell crank assembly) that slides onto the shaft sticking out the left side of the transmission which connects on the front side with the control shafts comming down the steering column and on the back side with the vacuum shifter mechanism works its way off the shaft from the transmission. I got it all lined up properly, loosened the clamp and slid it back on and retightened it. Lasted about 2 days before it did it again. Anyone know if this is chronic and endemic to this transmission type, and if so, anyone have any ideas how to avoid having it recur again? And NO, I'm not planning on converting to a modern tranny, I want to keep her as stock as possible.
