For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: May 2010 Posts: 303 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2010 Posts: 303 | I have a 55 chevy 3100 truck with the 235 engine and the original foot stomp starter. The engine runs great as long as you keep the starter engaged. But as soon as you let off the starter the engine goes dead. I had all the wirng off the cab at one time when I had the cab off the frame. I have the dark green wire going to the coil and the other wire going to the wire that comes off the starter switch. Do I have this wired correctly? Thanks for any help on this problem.

To check I would run a fresh wire from the coil to the battery, remove the existing one that came from the ignition switch. A wire with with alligator clips is fine. Be sure you still have the wire already from coil to distributor. Other than plug wires you'd need nothing else to see if it'll run. If it will run when "hot wired" as described above you're then one step closer.

When the starter is engauged the coil gets current from the bypass on the side of the starter switch. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. I think I have a bad resistor because everything is wired correctly according to the assembly manual. Anyone know where I could pick a resistor up at? I don't want to run it to long like this because it will burn up my points quicker And thanks for helping me out with the problem.

I replaced the ceramic resistor on the fire wall and the engine runs great without having to straight wire the coil. Napa had the part for $10.50. Thanks to everyone who helped me out on the problem, great forum. | | |
