I went to a impound yesterday and found alot of options. There was 67 el camino and a 95 mustang. I would like to use air bags and have it on the ground. The guys at the impound had alot of ideas for my truck but I'd like some ideas from people who know the best way to go! I would like to go to coil spring and control arms. Thanks Chuck 49 | | | | Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 474 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 474 | What will your truck be used for ? Not hauling ,just driving ? | | | | Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 67 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 67 | The air-bags bring the truck up to ride height and anywhere in between. The truck will not be doing any towing or hauling. I saw on ebay a guy had 70 Chevelle rear axle in his truck. Are the 1967 El camino and 1970 Chevelle rear axles the same? they look the same. If it is the same I think that is the rear axle for me. Thanks again. | | | | Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 67 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 67 | I called off the 1967 el camino rear axle. I had to put a timing belt on my 1996 ford ranger. Oh FYI you can't hurt the four cylinder by breaking the timing belt. I did not know that. I called a guy in Arizona he got mad at me and asked me I would want cut up a perfectly good truck! I told him that what I understood I needed to do too get the truck on the ground. He's sending me his catalog. He says to change the rear axle gears for highway speeds and keep the torgue tube. What do you think? Thanks again. Chuck 49

If your going to air bag route along with trailing arm suspension get a rearend that is the correct width. Take into account what wheel and tire combo you want to use. The brackets will all have to be welded on for the setup you are looking to use. | | | | Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 67 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 67 | I want to stay with my 16 inch rims. The drum brakes work fine in the back. The manual brakes work fine for me. I had a 1968 saab that had manual disk brakes, that might work for me.I heard I could use toyota rear axles off there trucks and SUV's. They have 6 lug rear axles. I watch the truck show Saturday mornings on spike. They used a ford rear axle but they said it works well with there wheel and tire combo. They went with a wide 15 inch rim and tire. That won't work for me. Can I buy adapters for my 6 lug wheels? Thanks again! | | | | Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 67 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 67 | There's a lowered truck frame for sale on ebay right now. He wants 2,500 for the frame. Of course this being the holidays I have no money for me! I'm hoping he'll still have it after the first. Heres to to hoping! | | |
