Finally set it up today. I was practicing with some 18gauge sheet steel in preparation of repairing some sheet metal on my 48 two ton. This welder, model 211, has an auto setting mode on it. When I put it on the low end of the 18gauge range for .030 wire it worked great. It was getting too dark to work outside on the actual body pieces, so next week. I hadn't welded in over 20 years, it was fun to get back into it. Also have a Tecman auto darkening helmet. Funny it shows a logo with stars and stripes, but it is made in China. Has a shade range of 9 to 13. Seems to work fine, has a solar cell for power. I was using those panel clamps from Eastwood to hold the pieces together. Lets you but weld without much build up.

How does the spool gun work i have heard mixed reviews on it?

However for doing repair work on aluminum trailers, the gun was too clumsy to get into a lot of tight spaces and the gun got heavy after long use. I bought a Miller 251 with a push pull gun that I have dedicated to aluminum. However, for casual aluminum welding, a spool gun is fine. The quality of the weld is the same as a push pull. I still have the spool gun that fit on my 25 year old Millermatic 200 and never use it. It was a lot of trouble to switch back and forth. And labor with taxes and worker's comp costs me about $30 an hour, so its not cost effective to switch back and forth. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,554 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,554 | So ya bought a Miller,to my way of thinking they are the best.Hope ya enjoy using it.I have an old Miller AC stick welder, that I have used for many years. It still works like new. | | |
