Please don't tell me to "look it up", I feel like I've been reading search material for ever. I just can't tell which applies to my situation.

I want to use a 235 water pump on my 1955 235 motor to replace my 1953 216 because I can't afford the conversion pump they sell. My brother can press and shorten the shaft.

Which water pump do I buy for the 235, they have a short and long (like four inches to five inches) or does it even matter since we're going to cut it anyway?

I read that the pulley off the 216 for the fan blade that I will press onto the 235 could be too small and will turn the pump too fast (or spin too fast), is this true or do I need a different pulley?

Do you use the harmonic balancer off the 235 or the 216?

I am planning on using this water pump adapter on the 1959 261 that I am starting on for a pre-55 pickup. The question about the pulley and harmonic damper are also addressed in the text of the adapter description.

so if I read this correctly:

I need to buy a water pump for a 216, NOT the 235?
I use this adapter to mount it to the 235 using the 216 pulley?
I also use the harmonic balancer off the 216 (since its smaller in diameter)?

My only other question then is, do I use the fan blade off the 216 as well?

Yes.

And, if you follow the advice above, the groove-width on you 216's 6v generator should then match the groove-width on the harmonic balancer and on the water pump.

oops, I forgot to mention - I want to covert to 12 volt and replace generator with a alternater. Will that still work? And you didn't say - do I use the 216 fanblade or the 235?

If the alternator will use a 3/8" belt, a 53-54 235 water pump, fan, and crankshaft pulley should be used. At least that is what I am planning to use on my 1959 261. I am currently using that same arrangement on the 1954 261 in my street rod, but it does need the water pump adapter. I'm using the alternator bracket from Patrick's.

If you should need the wide belt pulley, they are available for alternators.Three finishes are available for the pulley.I bought mine from speedway motors, link below.

5/8" wide pulley

The wide belt pulley from your generator will fit right on a Chev alternator, if you want to stay with the wide belt look.

As long as the fan on the generator is the same as the fan on the alternator.

I'm sorry guys, but now I am confused. I thought since I was using this adapter plate (from hoyts link above) that I needed to buy the 216 water pump which would put the fan right where I need it? Then use the fan pulley also off my 216 with the 216 harmonic balancer.

It doesn't look like a wide belt to me. Am I missing something or do I need to buy a 235 water pump and use the 235 pulley and harmonic balancer?

Please, if its ok could you dumb it down for me?

I'm sure I could have the local shop put any type of pulley on the alternator that I need if that's the only other problem.

According to the ebay ad for the converter plate my '53 216 fan pulley and pump use the 3/8 belt. I don't think that's very wide is it?

I'm sorry guys but this is the last confusing point I think I have when it comes to making this swap work, but I just can't figure out what I need. I thought I had it before buy now I'm not so sure.

And when I've got that all figured out - I still don't have a clue what fan blade. I'm sorry I seem so confused - I feel pretty stupid right now!

Edit (Addition): Maybe I should just buy the short pump and pulley from Patrick's? I've got the 216 water pump and adapter plate priced at $105 right now anyway, and it jumps to $125 if I need the 235 water pump. Patrick's sells their short water pump and pulley kit for $140 plus shipping. Not too much difference and at least I'd know its right (plus then I assume I put the fan on that was out of the 235 or is there even a difference?) What do you think? By the way, sorry again for sounding like a broken record. I'm not a mechanic by any means, but I'm learning and I do enjoy it most of the time!

Use a 1953-1954 car water pump for a 235,it has the 3/8" pulley. The napa part number will be 58-126 . Use this with the adapter plate that pre68dave sells and it will be mounted in the right location. The water pump will have the pulley already installed.

tim, is the car water pump the same as the truck water pump? I don't have a napa to buy from - but a good home town parts guy instead.

The 1953 through 1955-1st series truck 235 water pumps would also have a 3/8" pulley, and is listed as the same for 53-54 cars.

great, so I'll buy the 1953 235 water pump with the 3/8 pulley (to put on my 1955 235), I'll use the harmonic balancer from my 1953 216, and I'll use the fan off my 1953 216. Could someone just confirm that's right?
