Just wanted to pass on some GOOD news regarding an aftermarket part.

Jim Carter sells a wiring harness on page 38 of their on-line catalog and I'm thrilled with it. The quality is first class and it looks very "stock" the way the bundles are wrapped. We've not had to add anything, splice anything or in any way make the slightest modification to get anything to fit or lay neatly.

Of course, these kits are for basically stock configurations with the only options being generator or alternator.

$210 each and highly recommended.

Lordy, Lordy, will miracles never cease! You mean we've finally found a reproduction item that we don't have to cut, splice, re-twist, grind, re-weld, re-drill or beat into submission!
Glad to hear it worked out for you Woody, you deserve some smooth sailing with all the work that you’ve put into her over the past four years.
I wish I'd had the same luck with the dozens of boxes full of parts that I've bought for the '54 this fall.

It's VERY unusual to find something of such obvious quality in this racket so when I do, I want everyone to know about it. Off the top of my head I can't think of another aftermarket thing (including a POS $500+ reproduction radio that doesn't even fit) that I've been so impressed with.

Also check out the Classic Parts (Chevy Duty) original-style wiring harness. The price is good and the quality is excellent. The wires are correctly color-coded (plastic, as in 1954).

I was looking through their catalog today and saw the harness you are referring to. I assume you have one? If so, a question: It appears that wire bundles are wrapped with electrical tape. Is that so?

The picture is too small to tell for sure.

Yes, I have three sets.

The bundles are wrapped in electrical-type tape and are a good match to the 1954 harness (plastic covered wires, not braided cover wires).

Well maybe it's just semantics guys, but I think you might have meant wrapping tape Tim? Electrical tape is not good for wrapping wires under hood. In short order, exposed to heat and oil the glue on the electrical tape will become a sticky gooey mess and will slip. The black wrapping tape that the automakers used did not have an adhesive on it. If you look at an original loom it’s wrapped tight then terminated at the ends by tucking or tying. It’s a little hard to find, but it’s out there, here is one link: http://www.wiringharness.com/ , and some of the other wiring suppliers used to sell the correct stuff.

Yes, Denny, the "electrical-type" tape that I referred-to would be black plastic wrapping tape (as used on the original harness).

The harness I have has the wires encased in black plastic braid with a yellow strand running through it. Never saw an original harness so I don't know if that matches the original for my year but it sure looks purdy.

HERE'S a picture of the harness I have... not stock looking but it sure is purdy! You'll have to excuse my giddy enthusiasm but you can't really blame me when you see what it looked like BEFORE.

Yepper, a bit of an improvement Woody. Man, about all you've got left now is to turn the key and break in that new engine.
Well you should be be all set by next September to do some touring right? I'm gonna try to get one of mine ready for the trip down to KC, probably the '50. You should make plans also, we had a real nice time and it was a fun ride in the old pickup.
