I have an unusual question for all of you.
Does anyone know what weight oil goes into the oil bath air cleaner for a single barrel rochester carb?
also I was wondering has anyone ever opened up the oil bath air cleaner and modified it to hold a modern air filter. I thought this would make for less of a mess, and still look original.
I had logged a question a while back about getting to much gas and not enough air into the carb, well it turned out I was using to heavy of a weight of motor oil in the breather. I switched to an after market filter, but would like to find a way to use the original parts. Thanks for any help you can supply. smile

Prior to the 60's when John Deere used oil baths, they recommended using the same weight oil you were using in the engine. From what I have read this is also GM's recommendation.

With a little patience and time I would think you could modify a stock air cleaner to accept a paper filter--some vendors offer one for John Deere two cylinder restored tractors.

If you look in the Cars and Parts issue just coming out, that would be Nov 2002, the Toolbag column has quite a few descriptions of how people modified their oilbath aircleaners to take a paper element.

The 1954 truck owners manual says ". . S.A.E. 50 weight in summer and lighter in the winter".

I added a chrome paper element air breather from "mr.gasket" the filters are a stock part you can get anywhere. smile But the only reason i did it was because i channeled my truck 2.5" so the hood would not close with the stock oil bath on it. oh well u can't have everything i guess.

Back in the early 50's I worked after school in a service station where we did those old air cleaners on 37 etc. Chev's and Pontiacs, and some of those other makes like **** or Dudge.
We just put the same oil as the crankcase in those air cleaners and never saw a problem. Sure saw some pretty hard sludge in some of those air cleaners though. Good memories! I'll stay like that with my 46, 235 that is in a 2 ton.

If you drive over enough rough roads you never have sludge develop in your air cleaner, cuz the oil will get sucked down the carb!
