I don't remember for sure, but I think the 700r4 was available in two types and the other would not work on your 250.
The 230, 250, 292 have the Chevy V-8 bellhousing pattern.

The throttle cable is critical. It must operate & be adjusted correctly. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though.
