I recently got my Master Parts Book and also my truck rear transmission got hungry and ate a bearing. Looking at the MPB, how or where can I cross reference the part number to a bearing number? I have no bearing number since it is all messed up.

Look at the front index pages under Bearing, then under that Transmission. The numbers next to the listed different Transmission Bearings tell you what page to look under to find the bearing Part Number.

Hy Chinito Quan, I believe it is your differential that ate a bearing, not your transmission. If you tell us which bearing failed we can look up the number for you. The MPB will break down each differential used in the truck, from 1/2 ton up.

Dear 3B:

I don't really know which is my rear axle (or differential). I guess you've seen the pictures on my post on the transmission thread. I assume it is a H-033, if so the bearings and seal will be:

187434 Bearing Differential
954462 Bearing Pinion shaft
3705725 Seal pinion shaft bearing
370251 Retainer Axle shaft bearing
592441 Seal Oil Axle shaft
111121 Bearing Axle shaft

Front wheels:

909552/909501 Cone (inner/outer)
909702/909701 Bearing (inner/outer)
9909602/909601 cup (inner/outer)
3656536 Oil Seal with retainer
3656535 Deflector

Am I missing anything if I want to change all bearings on front and rear wheels.

Thanks. I don't like been a leech, so if you can point me to a place to do the cross reference, I'll appreciate it a lot.

Hy Chinito Quan, I have gone over your bearing list,
187434 - I could find no reference to this number in my parts books or my bearing cross reference
954462 - crosses to a Bower 5306W
3705725 - changed up to 3776800 - which crosses to National 6818
592441 - crosses to National 5801
111121 and 370251 are probably replaced by Bower R1502EL
I believe the pinion bearings you need for this differential are
1 - 7450371 which crosses to Bower HM89449-HM89410
1 - 7450373 which crosses to Bower HM88547-HM88510

Front wheels

you have listed three different bearings here, obviously each front wheel only uses two bearings, I believe we're dealing with a 1/2 ton chassis here built between 1946 and 1957
inner bearing 909052 crosses to Bower B52, that is the number for the complete bearing
outer bearing 909001 crosses to Bower B01
3656536 seal crosses to National 6064
I hope that helps, I would like you to post the trucks serial number so that we may decipher it and know at least what chassis we're dealing with, I'm pretty sure that the rear axle has been changed to a 55B - 59 1/2 ton

Thanks 3B. You are right regarding the front wheel bearing. The MPB separates the bearing in the cone, the inner race and the actual ball casings (please forgive me if I'm not using the appropriate words, my native language is Spanish, and my technial English is very rusty). Thats why I posted the 3 parts number for the same bearing. On the pinion bearings, the number 187434 is correct, but also there is a 7450438 for 1/2 ton trucks 1947-53 and 7450385 for the same tonnage for 55-60 H033 differential. Those are the number my parts book said. I´ll try the numbers you sent me. Thanks again

After a thorough research, thanks to 3B slaping me awake, I found some interesting info, I'll appreciate any corrections or advice. 3B was correct regarding the chassis, it is a 47-53 1/2 ton. Thanks to the help of many guys here I narrowed it to a '49.

According to the later, the front wheel bearings part No. are:

a) If found separate: Inner: 909702 for cage, 909552 for cone and 909602 for cup. This data was taken from a 1939-1953 MPB. On a 1947-1954 MPB, same numbers. No number for the whole bearing. For outer: 909701 for cage, 909501 for cone and 909601 for cup.
b)In the 1955-1960 MPB, the numbers are the same, but there is also the number for the whole bearing: 909052 inner, and 909001 outer, just like 3B said. Also there are some other p/n for the cup and the cone e.g. 909067,909767,909567.

I'm happy with the No. given by 3B which is the whole bearing. Now regarding this bearing, the original one has balls in the cage. The cone and the cup makes it a thrust bearing (tappered). Ball bearings are supposed to be for radial loads, while tappered (usually rollers) are used for axial loads as well. It seems the bearings in question are tappered, but have balls in it. The question that arose is, will I find the bearing exactly as it is (with balls), or the new ones will come with rollers and will function equally well, using the part number given by 3B?

Now to the rear end. Here it gets a little bit more confusing. The rear transmission of my truck appears to be 55 2nd up, since it is an open one. Just to rule out the possibility: is it possible to have a GM type rear axle with torque tube and just change the carrier (pumpkin) with an open one type? Which year did the open transmission appeared? The preceding question came, because checking on the 39-53 MPB, there is just one p/n for pinion bearings, but on the 47-54 there are 4 different, one for 1940-1947, another for 1948 and up but before a certain serial number (100-22-36732), another for models after the given serial but before serial (100-24P-Z15410) and the fourth for models beyond the above. If a torque tube transmission differential cannot be half changed, I mean, just the pumpkin, apparently my rear axle is a H-033 (please see photos) Pumpkin 1 Pumpkin stamping, well it pretty much narrows the pinion bearings to the numbers 3B gave. If not, God have mercy of me. I'll appreciate any feedback. I'll bore all of you again later with the rear axle bearings.

Have a Happy Haloween.

It is possible for the '55-59 third member to be installed in a torque tube rear housing. If yours is a TT housing it will be mounted to a hinged bracket which should be welded when the when the later unit is installed. If your housing is bolted directly to the springs there is a good chance it is a '55 first housing.

Thanks for the info about 100-24P-Z15410 being the first truck with the open driveline. That was for the Pontiac plant anyway. I've often wondered when the change was. My GMC MPBs are a '54 and a '59 and neither give that info. I still need to find out when Oakland and St. Louis changed.

Hi you all!! Since it is almost Halloween I have a great mystery.

Checking parts No. for differential bearings on 1939-1953 MPB, the number is 187434 (3B didn't found the cross reference) I found a Timken cross reference book and guess what, the number doesn't appear there either. On the 1947-1954 MPB the same number appears and also the 7450438. This number doesn't appear in the Timken cross reference. But on both parts books appears a reference to K 11445Z (SKF numbering). On the 1955-1960 MPB the number that appears is the 7450385, with no reference to any bearing and it doesn't appear as well in the Timken Cross Reference. Which shall be the approriate bearings for the differential? Thanks

Hy Chinito Quan, I rechecked my parts books, and I can find no reference to the p/n 187434 as far back as 1938. Chinito your rear axle housing is the old type, someone has torched the pivot plates off and turned it into a solid mount type. That being said I still think someone has swapped in a 55B - 59 1/2 ton differential [pumpkin]. Rather than looking through the parts books for part numbers, look at your old parts, there should be numbers on those, you may have to cross them over to something currently produced, but then you know you will be getting the parts that fit your paticular rear axle as it is currently configured. Lastly when you ask about a part, tell us where in the assembly the part is located, for example your differential has two pinion bearings, two differential side bearings, and two wheel bearings, some of the older differentials used one large bearing in front of the pinion gear, with a smaller support bearing behind the pinion gear, so please tell us which bearing in the assembly you are looking for. Good luck.

So it is possible to to turn an old type into a an open transmission by changing the differential. Regarding the swap, just the housing might be old and the gear and pinion be changed (it is a 3.90 gear ratio)to a newer one? Same with the axles? Is just the pumpkin the one changed in order to turn it into an open transmission? I do have some photos of the casting numbers on several parts. Is it possible to identify them by it? I'm actually looking for all bearings, front and rear for the pinion, both, left and right for the differential, as well as for front and rear wheels (in the front both inner and outer). The reason I'm sort of trying to rely on the Parts Book is that the actual configuration is not at all well assembled. For instance, one pinion bearing has the cage of the roller a Bower, and the cup is SKF. The cup, even though fits the exterior diameter, the width doesn't cover the whole bearing, barely the rollers. It would be wise to take each part (say pinion, axles, etc) to a bearing distributor to check for diameters and go from there? Here are some photos of my parts book, the drawing and the listing. Check the Number 2.0760 (diff. bearing), theres where the 187434 number appears. Part Numbers 1 Part Numbers 2. I really appreciate all the help you've given me.

Cletis: The info I placed regarding the serial number for which the part number of the pinion bearings change was just for illustrating that there were more than one part number for the same bearing. I had no idea what that meant until you brought it up. It is good to know. Regarding Oakland, the change came for serial 100-24C-Z5201, no info on St Louis on my books.

Hope this helps

Thanks. I'll write that in my book too.
