Were the original brackets that hold the side view mirrors on an AD black, body color or chrome?

Up early worrying about the correctness of that old truck Woody?

I’m sure you’ve already been here and that’s why you posed the question, but for anyone else that might be new to the forum, here’s what I found in my reference material.

There's only one bracket listed in the reproduced 1950 accessory list, 986381.
The 1954 accessories list doesn’t show a bracket at all.

The parts book up to 1954 also doesn't list a bracket in gp.10.185. How ever they do offer an “Arm” in gp.16.069, pn. 3696059 left & 3695368 right both approximately 10” and both use the 3696632 mirror (5 1/16” OD).

The parts book up to 1957 listing is the same as the 1954 parts book but continues the part number up thru 1957.

I would assume that they were all painted, if they were bright metal they surly would have mentioned it as a sales feature.

I’d bet the farm that the chrome mirror arms are an invention of the vendors to fill the hot rodders desire to dress up an old work horse.

Thanks Denny... now I know they are "arms" instead of "brackets" and that they were more-thean-likely painted... but still left wondering what color, black or body color?

Well don't quote me but every original one that I've seen were black. Again, locic tells me that like the engine which was panted (dark gray) all of the items that were bolted onto it like the starter, generator, fan, distributor, reather,etc., were black. So it seems to me that the mirror arms, under carrage spare carrier, running boards, bed wood and runners were all added after the truck was painted. The only exception was the side mount spare which was assembled with the box and fenders and all was painted at the same time.

Black mirror arms (all GM sizes and styles, during A-D years).

Check out this post I recently bought these NOS brackets they are a gloss black. I am with Denny and Tim 22 trucks in the last 24 months and I have not seen anything but black.
