I am not looking for someone to walk me through the process (although that would be nice), but simply a general how-to with any potential pitfalls, etc.

Not that hard find center and start. Get floor shifter first don't do it with out that. I located a hurst-indy shifter from Summit. But there website says it is for 1969 and up GM trucks... any others leads.
