Maybe a silly question, but my front shocks mount through a large steel pin, on the upper and lower end of the shock. The pins don't seem to have any locking mechanism to keep the shock from sliding off... am I missing something here?

yes, the threaded ends of those mounting studs

are you saying the 'pins' are part of the shock or part of the truck? the shocks should have eyes on each end that fit on studs that are part of the upper and lower mounts - the studs have threaded ends that take a large flat washer and lock nut .... those threaded ends are commonly snapped off trying to get seized nuts off, and then you need to get the remainder off and replace with a properly sized grade 8 bolt, although some new shocks will come with mounting bolts [Monroe 3100 or Gabriel 82047]

OK, so that's it. All four bolts for the front shocks are broken off at the threading. They broke so cleanly they look like there was never any part of the stud missing. I can't believe how straight the breaks are. It looks like there is something missing.

Off to the hardware store.
