I have a 66 Suburban, and am trying to find the factory paint scheme for the exterior. I am going Red lower half, with the Ivory upper half. I also have painted bumpers and grille. My questions are: Should the wheels be the same color as the Lower Body (Red)?
I have West Coast Jr Mirrors, should they be Red or Ivory?
Around the front lights, which part is painted Ivory?
And, should the recess that runs left to right across the back between the the tail lights be painted red or the Ivory Accent?
I realize that this is a Paint related question, but I thought someone on here may have an original paint Burb or Sales Flyers that would show this. Thank you for your help.

First of all, let's establish if this is a Chevy or GMC. Since this is mostly a Chevy board, I'm assuming that it's a Chevy.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. I looked through all of the 60's in the gallery, and you don't get to see many Burb's in stock colors, but good enough condition to get some good color info. Our's was originally white, which the wife doesn't care for. So we have been kicking around either Red with Ivory upper, or the Terquise with the Ivory upper. I just havn't been able to find a good condition photo of the Terquise yet, to really make a decision. Most are original faded, which makes it kind of tough. Again, thanks for the reply.

Mine was turquois, look in my photobucket I think there are pics of the firewall I repainted-its a great color when not faded.

It sounds like you are half interested in originality and half not. In my opinion, if you stick with an original scheme, you can't lose. There was quite a variety of colors and two tones available, if you use the period sales literature for reference.

I powdercoated my wheels to match the top, and used chrome hubcaps and rings. The match between bottom and top seem to pull the colors together.

Great bunch of info guys, those are some nice looking vehicles. I think that should do what I was looking for. The Miss's like the Red and White, and I was leaning toward the Turquoise and White. Since I like her cooking better than mine, you can guess how it turned out. I'll get some pic's out when it's done.

Tony: Thank you for the info, and great pic's. It looks like you have spent a lot of time going over every nut and bolt on that baby. Nice job.

I have looked at a number of vehicles to see where the split line for the 2 colors runs down by the lower corner of the windshield. It always seems to peters out at the windshield gasket. I never realized that the Ivory runs all the way across the front of the windshield.

I have a couple of questions:

First, the " Race track " that gets painted Ivory around the Headlights amd Grille, has a half round recess in teh metal along the edge of it. Does this recess get painted Ivory also, or does it stop inside of it?

Second, I see that you have a bracket that supports the outer end of the Front Shock Stud. I have seen these in catalogs, but I thought they were an after thought. Were these factory mounted on the 4x4's ?

I am not sure your question on the half round recess...

The outer flange on the front shock mount is factory.

I am using the easiest spots to tape off, which I figure is where GM stopped with the white paint. I figger it was white, they masked the race track using a cardboard template, then painted the body color. I'm pretty sure at least @the St Louis plant the two tone stuff started out white, then body color was painted later. The one OE paint version I have simply has the "center" painted white, the recess is at the edge. Tony's recess is painted white, but the on the one I have the recess is body color. I've seen it both ways, possibly even done differently @diff production plants.


Classic Performance Part & Early Classic Ent. carry those shock mount brackets, used to strengthen the area of frame which can crack-its also used on the low rider/air bag rigs.

I was wondering about the shock brackets, because one of my shock holes in the frame is washed out, and I thought this would help support it after I get it repaired.
