I have a 41 1.5 ton chevy truck. The front bumper on my truck had been painted gray along time ago, I want the paint off. Are the bumpers from these trucks chrome or stainless steel? I'm trying to decide if I can use paint stripper or do I have to be more careful because of the chrome underneath.

If there is chrome under the paint you can bet the General didn't put it there. Also maybe the bumper has been replaced ??. I have never seen one that was not originally painted. (now watch someone disagree) Half ton yes, 1 ton +, not.

If its not originally chrome or stainless, it has been replaced. But not just replaced, replaced with what I think is a chrome bumper that has been painted gray. There is some paint flaking off around the bumper bolts, its definitely not plain steel under there. So fine (paint is cheaper than chrome) if it should be painted what color should it be?

Not to be that guy but I have a 2ton with a painted bumper... definitely not originally chrome or stainless and if it's been replaced or not it was replaced with an OEM bumper. As for the color, whatever you ^%$# well please.

Guess i'll have to be the one who disagrees. The '41, & earlier Chevrolet 1 1/2 ton trucks had the smaller pickup style bumper, & not the heavier channel type steel bumper that the '42, & newer had. This smaller bumper could be had, new chrome plated. My brother had a '41 model 1 1/2 ton flatbed, that was all original with a surface rusty chrome front bumper on it.

Thanks Spanky, that true, the 41 has a bumper like the small trucks. The 42 and up have a different style bumper that was definitely a painted bumper.

See the attached picture. This is our 1940 1-1/2 Ton. It is all original with only 21,000 miles. My grandfather bought this new in 1940 in Great Bend, Kansas. The bumper was chrome from the factory on this truck.

NICE TRUCK you got there alkay3 you've got me beat, my 41 has 26,000 miles on it. Thanks for the input.

Hotrod, The truck was only used around a 200 acre estate in Michigan. That is why it has the high flotation tires on the truck. I have the original tires and wheels, but we had the custom 15x10 wheels and flotation tires put on to keep from tearing up the grass.
