I'm getting to be all over this site as more problems arrive on this project . The latest in the list of failures is the alternator , or at least the regulator , maybe both . Seeing as to how the alternator is very small being under 40 amps , and isn't the correct one for the engine as well , (pulleys do not line up) I was thinking it would be better to up-date the system to an internal regulated system and try for a 80 amp alternator . Anyone have any tips about what needs to be changed in order to make this swap ? Can the same mounts be used ? Any major wiring changes needed ? Is it worth the trouble ? Thanks for any advice . I now need to head over to the suspension section for help in that area . Sure is great having all this information in one location . | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,777 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,777 | The most common swap when going to the internal-regulated alternator is the Delco 10-SI series. It's available in amp capacities from about 55 to 100+ depending on the donor vehicle. It's slightly larger in diameter than the external regulated alternator, but a simple tensioner bracket change is usually all that's needed to make the swap. Wiring is ridiculously easy- - - -just install the same battery wire you took off the original alternator, and install a jumper wire from that terminal to the wire terminal marked #2 on the side of the alternator. If you want to use a dash-mounted idiot light, find the original wire from the dash that makes the idiot light illuminate when you ground it, and attach that one to the terminal marked #1. Cut away and tape any leftover wires, including the connector to the original regulator, and drive on! Jerry
