The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop '53 3600 Exhaust

All I need before I can register my truck is an exhaust setup. I called a reputable indy exhaust shop yesterday and they quoted me $400 to put on a simple exhaust setup. I called Midas and they didn't have a bend card for the 3600. They had a 3500 and 3700 listed oddly enough though. They wouldn't give me a quote over the phone.

Am I right in thinking $400 is really steep? I only want a stock style exhaust with a small muffler.

I think that is high.

I went to a local shop in North Dallas who bent the pipe and put the muffler on my 55 2nd 3200 for under $150. That was around 3-4 years ago.

I now have a muffler bought from Jim Carter that I plan to use on the 48. Using this muffler I don't believe it will cost $100 for this truck.

have you thought about fabricating your own? the exhaust on my 1950 is pretty simple and i don't imagine that the 53's were all that different.

you could spend roughly the same amount or less on straight tubing and a tube bender and make your own, with the added benefit of having a tube bender for some future project(s). harbor freight has some inexpensive tube benders that would work very well for fabricating an exhaust system and then you have the added benefit of bragging rights that you built it yourself!

if you need dimensions (i.e. bend card) for a 3600, i could take some measurements off of mine or someone else who has a 53 3600 could certainly help you out if you wanted to make your own.

The problem with that is that I have a homemade bumper on the truck, and it gets in the way of the stock exhaust, plus shipping would be easily over $50.

I went down and talked to them, and got them down to $350, and the guy was a arrogant pain, so I went to midas up the road. $600 for a basic exhaust. I don't know if I made it out the door before I broke out laughing.

Might just have to bite the bullet and pay the $350.
