For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2009 Posts: 110 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2009 Posts: 110 | I got a '51 half ton truck and got a problem adjusting the doors...The doors adjustment (gap) all around is just find and they close and open with no problems but once the doors are close I get a "play" in and out of about 1/4" to 1/2". I have adjust my strickers and latches every possible way but it doesn't get any better....what am I doing wrong??? I got new latches, strickers and even screws thinking the old ones had seen better days but it didn't help the problem at all.

It should be no more than 3/16 inch. Originally there were shims specifically for this but not anymore that I know of so I made my own. Not sure if this is what you need but it's my best guess. NOW REMEBER these were FARM trucks..for the workin man in the 50's..an he wasnt worried bought fit an finish ...just how MANY bales he could haul or how many full season HOGS he could crate and haul to the sale. I know my truck don't have any shims; however, the play I am experiencing is front to back as you open the door. It almost feels as if the latch should be set back into the cab about another 3/8" which I know it can move back that far.
Does anyone know if there is a bumper, nylon maybe spring loaded part that fits on the latch itself (Noth the two bumpers on the outside). Something that would hold the stricker once closed? | | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 | At first glance those latches look complicated but do yourself a favor and watch how it works and you'll see that it's pretty straightforward. Like I said, I had the same problem and was completely stumped... even welded some metal to the inboard part of the striker plate thinking that would help but it didn't. Then I made the shims and it fits perfect.
I know it sounds completely illogical but it worked for me. | | |
