I'm pretty sure I dont need to remove the engine on this one and it would really same me a lot of time and expense if I can do the rebuild in frame.

| | | | | Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 2,773 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 2,773 | You'll need to remove the radiator, water pump, balancer, valve cover and lifter covers. Remove the fasteners through the cam thrust plate (behind the holes in the gear). Set the engine to #1 cylinder at TDC, the marks on the cam and crank gears aligned and the rotor pointing to the #1 spark plug. After you have removed the lifters and distributor, the cam should pull out. Take care not to mar the cam bearings by pulling the cam out straight. If you don't have the gear marks aligned, the cam will not clear the crankshaft either at #3 or #4, I can't remember which.

Two questions I have now. Any tricks of the trade for removing the distributor and camshaft. Thanks again for your help.

| | | | | Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 2,773 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 2,773 | No real tricks. I would use a paint marker (or whatever you have) to mark the distributor. Mark both where the rotor points to on the body, and mark a place where the shaft housing meets the engine block. Be sure you're at the top of the compression stroke of #1. Remove the vacuum advance line and the bolt holding the distributor to the block and it should pull right out. If it's stubborn work it up and down. If its still stuck and you have the crankcase pan off you can remove the oil pump and drive the distributor up, just use something soft like plastic or wood when you hit it with a hammer.
