I've read all the links (no hyperlink intended) and found my engine to be built on April 26, 1960 and to be a 235ci with the 848 heads. Correct me if I'm wrong, the knowledge attained was from the following information:
Cast #: 3769716
Date Code: CON4 D260
Heads: 3836848
I'd like to repaint the engine. I have no idea if it has been repainted from it's original color, but I do know that it is not the right engine for the truck seeing as the truck is a 1957 3100. The current color is blue. Since I'm not sure what it came out of it is possible that it is the Blue Flame, which I believe was only installed in cars not trucks, and would've been blue.
My question is this, how can I determine if my engine is from a truck or car. Once I know this I should be able to narrow down the color options.

What's the serial number stamped next to the distributor? That number will tell what the original application was.

That was the one piece I was missing. It is hidden under like 50 years of dirty, grease, oil, and grime. I'll look for it when I return home this evening. Once I have the serial number where can I input it to determine the application?

The number/code that Bill suggests, is your easiest way to determine 56 or later car/truck. If you have-to or want-to tear into the engine, if it has hydraulic lifters, they were only used on car engines. However, 1958 and later truck engines could have been after-market-fitted with hydraulic lifters.

It's the 235, which according to your data makes it the Blue Gray, which is what the engine seems to be currently painted. Next question, where could I get a paint code for Chevrolet Blue Gray so I can go to the local paint store and they can mix it up. Or is it a possibility to find it in a spray can (preferred)?

Update:
Couldn't find a paint code for the Blue-Gray so I just went with the GM Corporate Blue, which is at pretty much any auto store (I went with Napa). It looks good.

Question:
I've been thinking about doing a period correct V8 mod to my truck since the 235 isn't original. I know the V8 trucks were stamped on the VIN, but I have access to a 1957 283 out of a Belair for $150, not seized and looks pretty clean under the valve covers. What is the main differences between the V8's installed in cars vs. trucks?
