As I remember, the adapter bushing , which is a pipe taper and might seal better with pipe sealant, threads into the head. The sensing bulb sits inside this, and is sealed on a small shoulder as the second nut is tightened. The second nut, (square nut?) mechanically seals the bulb in the adapter fitting...hope this is right!  Stuart | | |

It's been a mere 44 years since I played with that item. Your probably right on the money...I do remember a weird square headed fitting that screws into the head and holds the bulb in though...I think!

There is no 2nd fitting. What you said about sealing mechanically is right, looks like the fitting sandwiches a little flange on the temp. "bulb" between it and the head. What I'm concerned about is how old these pieces are- they probably are not completely smooth, so a leak may occur. So, maybe some of that permatex sealant on that flange would work? | | |

You can screw a 216 style temp sender into a 235 head with a 1/2 NPT to 3/8 female gas flare adaptor- the early sender uses a gas flare taper and threads, not pipe threads. The 235 sender uses 1/2" pipe threads.
