Took the the ol 38 1/2 ton out for a drive - on the way home I started hearing a loud rattling noise in the clutch area. Rattle goes away when clutch pedal is depressed. Shop manual says to replace "retracting springs" in diaphram to eliminate this noise. Checked Jim Carter and they do not list these items. Anyone have a source for these?

Your throwout bearing is probably riding on the fingers. I'm not sure what the manual says, but if its an Inland style clutch, they are not serviced anymore. However you can buy rebuilt ones.

Do you have enough clutch free play so the throwout bearing is not touching the pressure plate fingers? Do you have the right clutch return spring?

Thanks for the tips - ain't got much free play (1/2" max). I will adjust and see if that helps.

Well - looks as though I may have tranny problems!! Everything appears fine with clutch assembly (throw out brg.,pressure plate, clutch disc, pilot bearing). Even checked fork ball. Drained the gear oil to pull tranny and noticed a fair amount of shiny particles in the oil. Gonna' break it open and have a look just to see if anything is trashed.

A light ticking sound is most likely a bearing in the tranny.

Took the ol 3 speed apart - discovered the front bearing locknut was partially chewed up and bits of zinc (from locknut) were everywhere!! Apparently, it was not staked in properly by last person that did a rebuild. Hopefully caught it in time - all the gears look good. Gonna' clean everything real good and put new bearings in. Hope I can find a new locknut/oil slinger somewhere. Got any suggestions for one of those?
