yes they swap out, I know 67-72 3/4 ton automatics had 4.10s so if its out of a 1 ton double check the ratio.

Does 4.10 to 4.57 make such a big difference, I am in the same boat and will be interested to know the driving experience and mileage on that.

You lucky so-and-so. Where did you find it? I've been hunting for a while for my 49 with no luck. Not looking in the right places, I guess.
If it is from a 1-ton and isn't a 4.10 ratio, you may want to hang onto it anyway. Randy's Ring and Pinion (sometimes) has gearsets for 4.10, but they only fit in later carriers. And they COST... Plus the install kit.

Good luck, I hope it's the 4.10.

Current fleet (subject to change w/o notice)
\'49 GMC 3/4-Ton , 60 Austin Healey Frog-eye Sprite (some assembly required), 2011 Dodge Avenger, 2015 Jeep Cherokee. No, they don't all run.
My other ride is a (B737)no, (B767)no, A320.... Update... was Embraer E190, now Boeing B787.

Knowledge is a wonderful thing, but ignorance means you don't know you can't do something.

The size of the brakes and the gear ratio.

The 4.10 is hard to find and will swap right into either housing so if it really is 4.10 you've a great find!

Can you post exact details of the donor truck?

1969.
Chev or GMC?
Auto or manual?
What motor?

These details may help others looking for this diff.

1955 1st GMC Suburban | 1954 GMC 250 trailer puller project | 1954 GMC 250 Hydra-Matic | 1954 Chevy 3100 . 1947 Chevy COE | and more...
It's true. I really don't do anything but browse the Internet looking for trouble...

It's right at 90% overdrive or a 10% reduction in RPM at any given speed. So if you have to turn 3000 rpm to go 60 mph with the 4.57 you'll only have to turn 2700 with the 4.10. (somebody check my math) Does it make such a difference is a valid question.
