When I am reading about tuning everywhere they mention steel ball on the flywheel to the pointer on the bell housing. I have seen a triangle on the flywheel pointing to my pointer now and I set the distributor rotor to point to 6'0 clock positing by moving in the insider rotor shaft mount with a screw driver. The only thing I ever saw on my wheel is a threaded hole other than triangle pointer. Is that what is referred to as steel ball or my steel ball fell off?

Is this all I need to tune

I gave my exhaust manifold and intake for resurface as there was a gap from the head to manifolds.

Please share some info

Thanks

Where did the flywheel come from? If you are using a 6 volt starter/flywheel(with either 6 or 12 volts)the ball is positioned for timing a 216 and not a later 235 and is of no use to you.

rotate the flywheel slowly another few inches and the ball should appear. It may be full of crude and hard to see. when found, mark it with soap stone or yellow crayon. Hope that helps Floyd

Curt

You are right the flywheel and starter came from my 216 motor. But when the guy sold me the truck it was converted to 12V . As I mentioned I dont see it as a ball but a threaded hole, dont know if you refer to that as ball. Today I put my grinded manifold, it fit nice and flush. I aligned the distributor to point #1 plug and put some gas thro Carb and fireup the truck, no sign of starting only. I checked the spark plug with inline tester and good light shows up in the connector. I dont know now it is carbuerator or still distributor. I am all bumed up and need to get engine running. I need to mount my front clip and etc

Thanks for all your suggestions

I feel your pain brother. I went through this a few months ago trying to get my 235 timed/started. I did come on this site and used the search feature. Found some post by bolter "Pete52" that helped me out.

The problem I had was when I installed my distributor, the gears were off a tooth or two. I thought my distributor pointer was at number 1 but it was off slightly. I finally corrected that by using a screw driver to move the oil pump. After that the tang dropped in and I was at the correct position.

A second problem was at my first attempt to line to pointer to the ball I was 180 out. My number 6 was at TDC instead of number 1.

On my flywheel the ball comes just after the triangle. So when I triangle show up I just move my flywheel a few inches then the ball shows up. The ball is just a stamped circle.

I painted mine white with the pointer just as 49 floyd suggest.
heres a pic

This helped when using the timing light.

Like Curt B. stated since your using a 216 flywheel the mark may not work for you.
I have read on another forum the that mark should work for you if you have the early 235, but not the later High Pressure 235.

"The full pressure 235's are timed at a diffrent degree of advance than the 216s and early 235s. The 216 and the early 235 low pressure 235 used the same timing. The position of the timing mark on a late 235 flywheel would be in a diffrent location thant the others."

Good luck

DADS50 Thanks for your detail response, and thanks to everyone. Mine is definately a full pressure later model 235, so I have to go with intake valves and distributor position to start with. I tried last night, I might have timing issue in addition when I rebuilt the carb, it is leaking from the sides. may be now I am have gas starvation. I pour through the top hole still leaks out. I have to fix that problem. It was not leaking before someone said the accelarator spring and rod conneting side they use lead filler to fill probably JBWeld might work they said. I have to try that now

Thanks to everyone .

Ganesh
