on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 841 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 841 | i have a ramsey 8000 winch on my 64 wrecker and it's way overdue for some mant. it has a zerk fitting on the side of spool away from the controls, right beside of it a rubber plug. on the side with the controls it has a pipe plug. when i had this apart several years ago it looks like it had some heavy grease in both ends. should i remove the plug and put a zerk fitting and grease both sides with a moly grease or add some kind of oil to the side with the controls? does anyone know. i thought the control side just had a broken off zerk fitting but it looks like a plug. thanks | | | | | Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 469 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 469 | Don't know for sure on a ramsey, but I have a 8000 lb Tulsa that I use 140 gear oil in the gear case and gun grease on the other end. I've hade winches in the past that leaked real bad so we would fill the gear case with gun grease and hit the zerk onced a week with the gun when we greased every thing else on the truck. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 841 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 841 | thanks ttodd, i think i will try that. if it leaks i'll add the fitting. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 247 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 247 | The tag on the side of the 8000 lb Ramsey winches on my 76 GMC wrecker says to use 140 weight gear oil on the gear side. I read an article awhile back stating that the performance of the winch could be affected if the oil on the gear side was low. Jim | | |
