Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 374 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 374 | Recently, I rebuilt my Carter W1. There is a spring that operates the accelerator pump which I do not believe belongs or at least was originally there (see the green box on the W1 carb pic pic below and excuse the nasty carb it was prior to the rebuild). Is this spring original? It seems to 'delay' the operation of the accelerator pump and cause a bog when the accelerator is revved quickly. In original carb pics I see (also original diagram of W1 below also with green box), it appears a hard linkage piece goes there instead. Anyone know for sure? If so, can I buy one or is it just easier to make. Thanks! Yours might not be a W-1. Look up member Carbking's website. He's a wealth of information. Jacques

The earlier ones have a pivot that goes thru the potmetal, the later models have a shaft that the pump arm pivots on. The ealier design has a problem of wearing out. I believe the spring you are showing is for the earlier carb. I think I have this right, if not someone will correct me. First off, from your photo, we see that your W-1 carb looks to be made up from parts of several different W-1 carbs. The air horn is not original, but from a pre 1940 W-1. The body is an "RPD" body made by GM in 1949. The bowl assembly looks to be from a 1941-49 W-1; so if your carb body is a genuine 1949 model, the accel pump in our kit will NOT work correctly! Also the spring link you mentioned was used by Carter on some of the W-1 carbs, but all other parts must be matched for it to work correctly with the correct pump. One way to tell if your bowl is a 1949 model, is the height of the Brass pump well inside the bowl. If it only comes up off of the bottom of the bowl about 1" it is a 1949. If the brass pump well extends up to just under the bowl casting, then the body is a 1948 and earlier. All of this may be why you are having problems. The 574s (post WWII) came from the factory with the spring as shown. Also, the solid link on the 483s (1941, 1942) was to be replaced with the spring during service.
The 684s (1949 only), due to the funky accelerator pump, used a totally different solid link from the earlier W-1's.
The 1949 carburetor had MAJOR engineering changes (lots of parts are very different, and may interchange, but not successfully, with earlier years). As Chevrolet downgraded their carburetor (opinion, others may differ) in 1950 to the Rochester B; parts for the 1949 carb are much less common than for other years. All parts, including kits, are available; but much more expensive than for the earlier years. The repair kit for the 1949 which contains the correct accelerator pump is unique to the 1949.

Having said all that, is it your opinion you'd replace it or leave it as is? | | |
