I assume I need a primer to get a decent job? will rattle can primer work? Does the JC orange /red apply easily and stand up to heat? Your help will be appreciated. tom | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 502 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 502 | Can't say I've ever seen a engine primer. I've never used a primer, nor have I ever been able to detect one ever being used when taking the paint off a motor. Now that don't mean there ain't one out there, but I don't see the need for one and I've painted a bunch of motors.
The high points are what is hard to get coverage on so when you spray it don't try to get coverage all at once. Give it the first coat, wait till it almost dries and hit it again. A third might be necessary but stay away from build up, thickness, as heat has a habit of cracking the paint if it's thick.

Over time I have noticed the engines with primer paint holds color much better. I do not suggest using one brand of primer and a differnt brand of top coat. They should be from the same mfg. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2008 Posts: 413 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2008 Posts: 413 | Use a good self etching primer. Dupont variprime is good, it has an acid additive that makes it self etch to metal. I used it on the engine in my Chevelle. I put on one good coat , then went over it wet on wet with seymour's Engine enamel from a spray can. I did this 10 years ago & it still looks good.
