For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 324 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 324 | I have a 93 Astro donor steering tilt column that I just installed. Happy with the look and the fit.Works good. No air bag setup (SRI) Was wondering if anyone has ever pulled the steering wheel from a modern column and swapped it for an original ad steering wheel? | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 | The question that comes to mind is: have you changed the front end to R&P or power steering? Typically the ones I've seen converted to a modern tilt setup have had this done and that is why the smaller aftermarket or tilt column wheels work. An AD w/o the power setup is much more difficult to man handle and why the larger wheel is needed as you no doubt are aware. But to answer you directly, I've not seen an original on a modern column but hopefully someone here has better knowledge than I about this. Very good question.
On ther same note I currently have an original 17" wheel on my 57' BelAir with modern PS and it is too big i.e., poor road feedback. The new replacement look-a-like 15" wheel looks better with the tilt column but the horn ring won't fit. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 324 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 324 | Hi 53moneypit Yes the front end is a Mustang II IFS kit with a power steering rack. After reading your comments I realized I hadn't considered at how much bigger the original AD wheel was (19") . The donor column I have has a 15" diameter. I lined up & held the larger AD wheel over the smaller one. First thing that I noticed was the view looking through the steering wheel was a bit more obstructed. Also looked out of place. I have decided, if it aint broke I aint gonna fix it. Thanks very much for your comments. | | |
