I dig all cars, old and new, whether they were hammered out of American iron, German steel, or Japanese tin cans. Being unable to appreciate them all is missing out on a world of great things.
But thats just MY opinion!

I would gladly give it a home....regardless.

Mind you, diesel's more expensive than gas over here,I assume the conversion was done to improve MPG and possibly torque?

Saw this one (or one just like it) at the ATHS show in CA a few weeks ago.

It was on a trailer for sale but had signs indicating we weren't supposed to climb up and look at it... seems the wrong way to go about selling a truck. I was curious to see the engine but didn't get a chance.

I kind of think its the one that was in Calif. Had I known it was a Buda engine, I would have probably disregareded the signs and looked at it, or if it would have been a GMC. Buda engines were were a very heavy duty engine and were purchased by Allis Challmers in the early 50's and marketed under that name until AC went broke. Its an interesting truck that looks like it it was professionally converted. Looks like it even has a 9k steering axle.

I think the notes on the truck when at the show indicated it was sent to Buda to have the engine installed. From what I could see it looked like a good job.
Overall the truck was a little rough around the edges, but if you like buda engines it's probably a great truck. I prefer playing with the Detroits and don't care to learn about another engine just yet, so found the truck interesting but not something I needed at all.

I also spotted the much larger than normal front axle, that's what caught my attention to go take a closer look.

With that larger fron axle, that truck almost needs the fenders, & steps from a 450, or 470 series GMC COE, of the same vintage.

The c.o.e. was originally owned by P-I-E ( Pacific Intermountain Express )Trucking company. I'm doubting gas and diesel prices were an issue back in the 50's and early '60's when this truck was in service but agree that torque would have been the deciding factor as these trucks drove up and down the west coast with most of their trucks pulling double trailers. The truck doesn't appear to have the lower running boards so I can see the owner not wanting people to stand on the gas tanks or climbing on the flat bed and falling through the rotted wood to take a peek at the interior.

I'm surprised anyone would respect a no climbing sign. When my employer rented my '53 for a produce display my radio antenna was broken off, the post for the side view mirror was bent and two young brothers (6&7 y.o.) climbed onto the hood and roof of my truck and jumped around on it. I was told to remove the truck for fear of a liability lawsuit if some other kids climbed on it and were to fall. We get sued on a regular basis.

There is a company still manufacuring Buda diesel engine parts and sells shop manuals to fix specific motors for the purist but I'm sure anyone with some welding skills can make a Cummins or Detroit diesel engine fit.
