I have a 57 chevy 1/2 ton that is pretty much bone stock. The only thing i can't figure out is if the rear axle has been swapped out or if a Dana 44 was ever an option in these trucks????????????? It's the right width, has stock looking perches and shock mounts, and is 6 lug. all the other rear axles i've seen in these trucks had the removeable center section and the round rear cover. I have confirmed it's a Dana 44, i'm not guessing. It has Dana cast on one area and 44 cast on the lowert ear where all Dana 44's are marked. Was this stock or not?????????????????? Thanks for your help!!

Dana axles were an option on some Suburbans, my 59 Chevy for instance. They were not 44's, however, but a really oddball special number that was unique to Burbs. Mine swallowed a pinion gear after I changed a seal, and didn't get the pinion nut torqued properly. After I was unsuccessful at finding a stock replacement, I swapped in a 3/4 ton Dana 60 out of a later-model GMC.

'59 was the only year for that Dana/Spicer rearend in a Chevy. It was a Spicer 45, and should have a Positraction in it. The rear was standard with and without Positraction in GMC from '55-'59, perhaps later as well. The rear is more or less a Spicer/Dana 44, some parts do interchange, but not many.
With the rear you have saying "44" on it, good chance it's from a '60s model GMC, which stayed with leaf springs when Chevy went coil.
