i would like to get one of those hi torque starters, does any one have any input on them? I have a 62'-63' 327 that i am doing a mild build on. i noticed that the starter was smoking after a couple bumps. or would i be better off with a different type of starter? and how can i tell how many teeth my flywheel has? are there certain fly wheel/starter combos that work better than others?

Call Don Allen (541) 902-2255, he can convert your starter to Hi-Torque or he can go a step higher and convert to ultra Hi-Torque. I have his Hi-Torque on my 53 216 and it's great. Tell Don what you have and what you would like to do.

wow that is a beaut! i have a feeling it may be a bit out of my price range for the time being, but i do envy the thought of keeping the stock (ish) starter. i will call him 2maro and and go from there. thanks!

Most good rebuild shops can sell you a heavy duty GM starter for a reasonable price. What you get at Auto Zone or other parts stores are the generic light duty type. I'm not impressed with the small aftermarket ones that Summit and others sell. They are way pricy and I have seen some installed with numerous shims in order to fit. The stock flywheel will have 168 teeth.

i ended up getting one of those ones from summit- i didnt really want to, but i needed it asap. i didnt have to use any shims (i was sure i was going to have to and thats why i didnt get one sooner) it bolted right up, fit just right and even works well! i will admit i dont like the sound of it. . .sounds retarded. dosnt look to bad-a lot smaller than the stock type. but hey- it works! im still going to try and get the old one rebuilt into a hi torque starter and put it back on but until then this one will do.
